Exploring Domains in Nursing Education and Strategies for Success
The Topic 1 Resource, “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education,” represents the core competencies of professional nursing education and provides a framework that nursing programs use to prepare professional nurses. The RN-BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using both direct and indirect care experiences for practicing nurses. In your practicum course, you will complete these hours with a preceptor and work to develop a change project.
Which of the 10 domains in the “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education” are you interested in learning more about and why? Based on the readings in the Class and Topic 1 Resources, what are some characteristics of successful students and what strategies can you implement to be a successful student? Identify a role model or mentor who would be able to support your professional growth.
Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and include one reference. Refer to “RN-BSN Discussion Question Rubric” and “RN-BSN Participation Rubric,” located in Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation posts, respectively.

I am interested in learning more about Domain 7: Clinical Prevention and Population Health from “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education.” This domain focuses on promoting health and preventing illness in individuals, families, and communities through various interventions and health promotion strategies. As a practicing nurse, I believe that understanding population health and implementing preventive measures are essential aspects of providing holistic care and addressing the underlying determinants of health.
To be a successful student in the RN-BSN program and in my practicum course, I recognize the importance of demonstrating certain characteristics highlighted in the readings. Successful students in nursing education exhibit qualities such as dedication, professionalism, critical thinking skills, effective communication, and a commitment to lifelong learning (Billings & Halstead, 2019). To embody these characteristics, I plan to prioritize time management, maintain open communication with my preceptor and faculty, engage actively in class discussions and assignments, seek feedback for continuous improvement, and stay updated on current evidence-based practices in nursing.
Furthermore, having a role model or mentor to support my professional growth is crucial. I would seek a mentor who has experience in the field of population health nursing and is knowledgeable about preventive care strategies. This mentor could provide guidance, share insights from their own experiences, offer advice on navigating challenges in the practicum setting, and serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement throughout my educational journey.
