Exploring Core Competencies and Strategies for Success in RN-BSN Program
The Topic 1 Resource, “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education,” represents the core competencies of professional nursing education and provides a framework that nursing programs use to prepare professional nurses. The RN-BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using both direct and indirect care experiences for practicing nurses. In your practicum course, you will complete these hours with a preceptor and work to develop a change project.

In the “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education,” one of the domains that particularly interests me is Domain 8: Professionalism and Professional Values. This domain emphasizes the importance of upholding ethical standards, demonstrating accountability, advocating for patients’ rights, and engaging in lifelong learning. I am intrigued by this domain because I believe that professionalism is essential for building trust with patients, colleagues, and the broader healthcare community. Additionally, cultivating professional values such as integrity, compassion, and cultural competence is crucial for delivering high-quality patient care.
Successful students in the RN-BSN program exhibit several key characteristics, including dedication, time management skills, critical thinking abilities, and effective communication skills. To be a successful student, I plan to implement various strategies such as creating a study schedule to manage my time effectively, actively participating in class discussions and group activities to enhance my critical thinking skills, seeking clarification from instructors when needed, and collaborating with peers to deepen my understanding of course materials.
As I embark on my professional growth journey, I believe that having a role model or mentor who possesses extensive experience in the nursing field will be invaluable. One potential role model for me is my current nurse manager, who exemplifies professionalism, leadership, and dedication to patient care. I look forward to seeking guidance and advice from my mentor as I navigate through the challenges and opportunities in the RN-BSN program and beyond.
