The Assignment

Young children begin the process of learning to read and write long before they enter formal school. Research shows that children who enter Kindergarten with specific kinds of knowledge and skill are more likely to become successful readers and writers. One of the aspects of promoting reading and writing skills is to create a literacy rich environment for young children.

Before beginning your DB submission- watch the video included in the module: Literacy Rich Environments and read our text, chapter 12. Once you have viewed the video- choose 2 strategies/ideas from the video that you would like to implement into your early childhood classroom. Each of the 2 strategies should be discussed and include an explanation as to why you chose that strategy, how it will promote literacy and how you will implement it in the classroom.

In today’s video, I want to discuss two strategies that I found particularly impactful for promoting literacy in early childhood classrooms, inspired by the concepts discussed in the module on Literacy Rich Environments and Chapter 12 of our text.

 

The first strategy I’d like to implement is the creation of a print-rich environment. Research consistently shows that exposure to print in the environment plays a crucial role in developing literacy skills in young children. By surrounding children with labels, signs, posters, and other print materials, we immerse them in a world where reading and writing are valued and normalized.

 

This strategy promotes literacy by providing constant opportunities for children to interact with print in meaningful ways. They learn to recognize letters, words, and symbols, and begin to understand the purpose and function of written language. To implement this in my classroom, I plan to label different areas and objects with words and pictures, create a print-rich library corner with books displayed at child height, and rotate displays of children’s writing and artwork throughout the classroom.

 

The second strategy I’m excited to implement is the incorporation of literacy into all areas of the curriculum. Literacy shouldn’t be confined to isolated reading and writing activities but should instead be integrated seamlessly into all aspects of the learning environment. Whether we’re exploring science, math, art, or dramatic play, there are countless opportunities to incorporate literacy skills.

 

This strategy promotes literacy by demonstrating the real-world applications of reading and writing. Children learn that literacy is relevant and necessary for communicating ideas, solving problems, and exploring the world around them. To implement this in my classroom, I plan to incorporate literacy into daily routines and activities, such as reading aloud during circle time, providing writing materials in the art area for children to label their creations, and integrating literacy into thematic units and projects.

 

Overall, these strategies align with the goal of creating a literacy-rich environment that supports and nurtures the development of reading and writing skills in young children. By immersing children in print and integrating literacy into all aspects of the curriculum, we can foster a lifelong love of learning and set them on the path to becoming successful readers and writers.
