1. Introduction

In the theoretical sphere, conflict theory is termed as one that views society as a basically competitive system characterized by a scarcity of resources. From this point of view, social order is well understood as coming forth from the ambitions of the elite to preserve their position, while less fortunate men and women form a coalition to overturn the prevailing authority and attain a fair share of the resources. This interpretative analysis, now and then called “consensus theory”, has generally pursued the developed world and its form of society. But the sociology of less developed, “underdeveloped”, third world societies, or societies emerging out of slavery or other kinds of dependency, remains here and there nominal and unsystematic. Some consensus theorists propose that historical and contemporary third world and other “marginal” societies can be ideal-typical cases of advanced industrial societies, while others allow for distinctive theoretical interpretations for these cases. But the basic essential of contemporary third world societies is them as a dependent subsistence economies striving to break the capital hold of an external dependent elite. With the dynamics of capital and class relations as a point of reference, critical analysts of various theoretical persuasions are thus bound to utilize conflict analysis in attempting to understand these societies. This paper will argue that dependency theory, in its various forms, has its greatest congruence with conflict theory and is capable of a rich development and synthesis. In so doing, it takes as its starting point the dual revolution which is the most formative event in modern world history, the transition to the modern world.
